Located between Millbrae and South San Francisco, San Bruno is perhaps best known as the city next to San Francisco International Airport. The city of more than 42,000 has much to offer its residents, including a lively shopping district, easy access to public transit and highways, and proximity to nature.
San Bruno became an official municipality in 1914 but remained primarily rural until the 1940s, when a housing boom transformed the city. The population stabilized again during the 1960s.
The city is home to Skyline College, Caltrain, and Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) stations, video-sharing company YouTube, and The Shops at Tanforan mall. The Golden Gate National Cemetery is located on Sneath Lane.
San Bruno residents enjoy easy access to a number of hiking and outdoor recreation areas, including 1,200-foot-tall Sweeney Ridge. Visitors to the ridge take in breathtaking views of Marin County and the East Bay on clear days.
The median household income in San Bruno is $79,000, and the median home value is $598,000, according to 2013 United States Census Bureau data. Of the city’s 15,356 housing units, 56 percent are owner occupied.
